Terminology

ABRASION RESISTANCE
The ability of a material to resist surface wear.

FILLER
Any material used in multi-conductor cables to occupy large interstices formed by the assembled conductors.

ALTERNATING CURRENT
An electric current that continually reverses its direction giving a definite plus and minus wave form at fixed intervals.

GROUND
An electrical term meaning to connect to the earth or other large conducting body to serve as an earth thus making a complete circuit.

AMERICAN WIRE GAUGE (AWG)
The standard system for designating the physical size of a wire by its circular mil area.

HYPALON
Dupont trade name for (CSPE) chlorosulfonated polyethylene-synthetic rubber.

AMPERE
The unit of current. One ampere is the current flowing through one ohm of resistance at one volt potential.

INSULATION
A material having high resistance to the flow of electrical current used to isolate conductors.

ATTACHABLE
Connector design permits field assembly and/or disassembly.

JACKET
An outer covering usually non-metallic mainly for protection against the environment.

CABLE
An insulated conductor or group of conductors contained within an overall jacket used for transmission of electrical energy.

MOULDED-TO-CABLE
Term used to define connectors, which are permanently attached to cable by a moulding process.

CABLE ASSEMBLY
A length of cable to which a connector is attached at one or both ends.

MULTICONDUCTOR CABLE
A cable consisting of more than one conductor.

CIRCUIT
The path of an electrical current.

NEOPRENE
Dupont trade name for polychloroprene.

COLOUR CODE
A colour system for circuit identification.

NON-POLARIZED
A design that permits reverse phasing.

CONDUCTOR
Any material capable of carrying an electrical current.

OHM
A unit of electrical resistance.

CONNECTOR
A device used to physically and electrically connect one or more conductors.

PIN
A male electrical terminal or contact.

CONTACTS
The part of a connector which actually carries the electrical current and is joined or separated to complete or interupt the circuit. Either male pins or female sockets.

PLUG
A connector which is attached, or provided with a means for attachment, to a cable. The connector may use either male or female contacts.

CONTINUITY
The state of being continuous or uninterrupted.

POLYCHLOROPRENE
A rubber-like compound suitable for rough usage applications.

CONTROL CABLE
Cable for operation in control or signal circuits.

POLARIZED
A design that provides a means of indexing a connector.

CURRENT
The transmission of electricity through a conductor.

PORTABLE CORD
Electrical cords used with portable or mobile electrical tools and equipment.

CURRENT CARRYING CAPACITY
The maximum current rating permitted to flow continuously through a circuit.

RECEPTACLE
A male or female connector that is installed in a structure or in a piece of equipment and which is intended to establish an electrical connection with an inserted plug.

DIRECT CURRENT
An electrical current that flows in one direction only.

SOCKET
Female electrical terminal or contact.

DUROMETER
A measurement which denotes the hardness of a substance.

VOLT
A unit of electromotive force.

ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE
That force which determines the flow of electricity; a difference of electric potential.

VOLTAGE RATING
The highest voltage that may be continuously applied to a mated contact pair in conformance with set standards or specifications.
